2012 SCHEDULE

INTENSIVE PRACTICE PERIOD

In the spirit of extended seclusions staged by Buddhist communities since antiquity, Palolo provides an opportunity each year for prolonged, intensive training. Like the periods of ango (lit. peaceful dwelling) held twice a year at Zen monasteries in Japan, a training period features an intensified zazen and sesshin schedule. There are numerous opportunities for dokusan with our teacher.

The training period is designed to serve local sangha members, who participate in the training period as much as their work, school, and family life allow.

May 23 through July 8

.

WEEKS OF REST

Residents and local sangha members will want a rest after the training period. No special events are scheduled for this period:

July 15 through July 28

2012 SESSHIN AND ZAZENKAI
SCHEDULE

The usual daily and weekly schedule is punctuated by periods of intense practice such as zazenkai and sesshin.

Zazenkai are one day practice sesshins. Participants bring their own brown bag lunch. No advance registration is required and there is no fee. Part-time sitting is allowed. Consult the monthly schedules for start and end times.

Sesshin are three to eight day periods of intense group practice. One must apply for a space well in advance of sesshin. Participants can sit part or full-time.

The Hele Malie sesshin is a hiking sesshin, like the Mountains and Rivers sesshins that Nelson Foster has offered for years in the mainland U.S. Participants hike in mindful silence, camp, and sit zazen in the mornings and evenings.

The Rohatsu sesshin, offered at the end of the year, is the longest, at eight days. It continues the Buddhist tradition of rainy season practice periods that end on Buddha's Enlightenment Day.

All retreats will be led by Michael Kieran unless otherwise specified.
